Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America, but the risk factors for heart disease can be preventable with lifestyle changes! While we can't change our age or our family history...we can take charge of our own health and make a difference in our blood cholesterol, blood pressure, and body weight by incorporating more nutrient-dense foods into our diet and exercising regularly. 

 

 

In general we want to reduce the following foods in our diet that may increase our risk for heart disease:

-Added sugars

-Refined grains

-Solid fats (fatty meat, butter, cheese, full-fat dairy)

-Trans fats (found in fried and processed foods)

-Sodium

 

Foods and nutrients to increase for a general healthy diet and to help prevent the risk of heart disease:

-Whole grains

-Vegetables (especially dark green, red, and orange vegetables)

-Fruits (berries, citrus, pomegranates, and tart cherries)

-Vegetable oils (olive oil, canola oil, grapeseed oil, and corn oil)

- Nuts and Seeds (walnuts, almonds, flaxseeds, and chia seeds)

-Legumes (beans, peas, and lentils)

-Fatty fish (salmon, tuna, and sardines)
